The course operates on a first-come, first-served, no tee times basis. Despite being near the center of the Washington/Baltimore megalopolis, the course is almost completely tree-lined, with only a couple of spots where neighboring homes are visible.

For tuning up your short game, the practice facilities at Gunpowder include a 9-hole "pitch and putt" course with holes of 35-40 yards.

The clubhouse at Gunpowder Golf Course is in the northern corner of Prince George's County, while the course itself makes a couple of trips to and from neighboring Montgomery County (no passport required).
