Carved out of the woodlands adjacent to its namesake lake, Stumpy Lake Golf Course is a public course in Virginia Beach, Virginia.

Despite the fact that the course is seconds away from the vast suburbs of the cities of Virginia Beach and Chesapeake, you won't find any signs of suburbia while playing at Stumpy Lake. The course was built upon a nature preserve and opened in 1958.

While the course has just enough bunkering to keep things interesting and a few strategically placed ponds, the biggest hazards at Stumpy Lake are the trees that line both side of most holes. The course is set up with six sets of tees, playing between 4,750 and 6,741 yards.

Tee times can be reserved online by members of the public. An "associate membership" gets you discounts for a year.

Given its location in the middle of protected natural areas, we have a feeling that Stumpy Lake Golf Course couldn't be built in this spot today. But 1958 was a different time, ecologically speaking. The course is on the western edge of Virginia Beach, which puts it about 15 miles from the beach. (It's a big city.) The nearest exit off I-64 is 3.5 miles northwest of here, at the intersection with Indian River Road.
